First Blog post

Hello My name is Rodric Laxina I am 21 years old and I am a social work major with a minor in art, I like anime style art work and digital drawing. I don't have much practice when it comes to actually drawing but I do have a passion to create something and be creative in my own ways. I am born and raise in San Diego California, I have lived in Alaska for the majority of high school and college but moved back last year to California to be with family. One of the artist that I like is name AOKAMEI. I think that they have a very vibrant and colorful art style that incorporates a lot of line art and painting techniques that elevates their art. here is a link to their Instagram.:   @Aokamei

This is one of their art sketches. I find it very inspiring and captivating. If you look closely you can see their references to human anatomy and how they masterfully incorporate that into an anime style.

As I mentioned earlier that I rarely ever draw but I do have a passion when it comes to art, ever since I was young I always painted using water colors or drawing on my tests, I remember I used to get in a lot of trouble for doing that.  Recently I have been trying digital art and I have been researching certain programs that help with drawing on my computer. I don't attend any drawing classes as of right now but I do practice here and there when I get off work or when I take breaks from homework.

  1. Art breaks - that sounds lovely. Good to be working with you again this semester. I need to examine why the Anime style has never resonated with me. I'm sure it would be instructive. In fact I'm getting my set list together for the summer concert season, and one of my sets is "this isn't me" and I am doing a fingerstyle instrumental piece "Always With Me" from "Spirited Away." Beautiful piece, but I don't know - even when the Godkids were totally into it.... I didn't get sucked in.

    1. Nice working with you again! I think anime style art amazes me because of its child-like essences it has, to me its like an escape from reality which is probably why I enjoy it. I am not sure if that will persuade you but I think watching people draw and animate tv shows / series takes a lot of work and I really admire their dedication to giving art meaning, depth and inspire / teach everyday people about issues that arise in real life but have this "cartoon style" to it.

  2. Hi Rodric! I think we were in a SW class last semester. I am also working towards a Major in SW and a Minor in Art. I'm hoping to use my LCSW and Art degree for Art Therapy. I really enjoy drawing also. Anime has always intrigued me! I love the styles of hair. I would doodle on my test too. Now Neuroscience shows it's a good outlet for anxiety. No more worries, you were using art to help you. I enjoyed your link. I think my favorite part of Anime is the vibrant colors and emotions in the eyes.

  3. Hello Rodric. I really like the picture you chose. One of my daughters is a huge fan of everything anime. The artwork, the shows. I was never a fan of the shows myself but admired the artwork. Unlike the animation of my generation, the drawings for anime are much more detailed and edgy.

Non-Western Art

In this blog post,  I’ll be exploring pieces from Japan, India and China, each with its own unique cultural background and artistic expression. Ryoanji Zen Garden (Late 15th century) Country: Japan Medium: Dry rock garden The Ryoanji Zen Garden, located in Kyoto, Japan, is one of the most famous examples of Japanese Zen rock gardens. It was created during the late 15th century, its exact origins and meaning remain a mystery, which provoke thinking and interpretation (Japan-guide.com, 2022). Consisting of 15 rocks of various sizes arranged around raked gravel, the garden embodies the principles of simplicity, harmony, and emptiness, central to Zen Buddhism. The minimalist design of the Ryoanji Zen Garden creates a sense of serenity and tranquility. The carefully placed rocks and carefully raked gravel evoke a sense of balance and order, encouraging visitors to quiet their minds and reflect on the essence of existence. Post Modern Reflections

In this blog post, "Post Modern Reflections” I will explore how contemporary artists have struggled with the transformations brought about by the rise of digital technology. From the 1980s to the present day, artists have used various mediums to reflect on themes such as identity, connectivity, and the impact of technology on society. Untitled (Portrait of Ross in L.A.) by Felix Gonzalez-Torres (1991) Artist: Felix Gonzalez-Torres Date:1991 Medium: Photographic print on paper Location: United States First, Gonzalez-Torres' portrait of his partner, Ross, who succumbed to AIDS-related complications, serves as an important reflection on the personal toll of the AIDS epidemic during the late 20th century (Gonzalez-Torres1991). The digital reproduction of the photograph highlights the ephemeral nature of memory and the potential for artworks to go beyond physical boundaries through digital publishing. The simplicity of the composition and the emotional weight of the subject matter ...
